One of the [[Human Brain|brain]]'s major "control hubs."
A large-scale [[Brain Networks|brain network]] responsible for adaptive cognitive control and flexible coordination between [[Attention]], [[Executive Function]], and [[goal-directed behavior]].
## What it is
- Location: Connects the [[Prefrontal Cortex]] (front of your [[Human Brain|brain]], [[Decision-Making]] & planning) with the [[Posterior Parietal Cortex]] (top/rear, attention & spatial awareness).
- Role: It’s the [[Human Brain|brain]]’s project manager — deciding what’s important, keeping you on task, and coordinating with other [[Brain Networks]].
## What it Does
- Goal management: Holds your “to-do list” in mind (working memory).
- Task switching: Helps you change gears when priorities shift.
- Conflict resolution: Keeps you from being hijacked by distractions or impulses.
- Network coordination: Talks to other big networks like:
- [[Default Mode Network (DMN)]]: mind-wandering, self-referential thought
- [[Salience Network]]: spotting important or emotional events
## Why it Matters
When the [[Frontoparietal Control Network (FPCN)|FPCN]] works well, you can focus, adapt, and make deliberate choices. When it’s disrupted, things fall apart:
- You lose track of goals.
- You can’t stop unhelpful thoughts (like rumination).
- You get stuck between over-focusing or drifting off.
## Connected Regions
- [[Prefrontal Cortex]] (dorsolateral and ventrolateral regions)
- [[Posterior Parietal Cortex]]
- [[Anterior Cingulate Cortex]]
- [[Default Mode Network (DMN)]] (dynamic coupling/decoupling)
- [[Dorsal Attention Network]]
## Functions
- Maintains and updates task goals
- Flexibly allocates attention between external tasks and internal thought
- Coordinates interactions between the **[[Default Mode Network (DMN)]]** and **Task-Positive Networks**
- Supports working memory, problem-solving, and complex [[Decision-Making]]
## Subsystems
- **Dorsolateral [[Prefrontal Cortex]] (dlPFC)**: task maintenance and goal updating
- **Inferior Parietal Lobule**: sensory integration and context-driven control
- **Frontal Eye Fields**: attention and eye-movement coordination
## Clinical Notes
- Dysregulation linked to **[[Depression]]** (excessive [[Default Mode Network (DMN)|DMN]] coupling)
- Underactivity associated with **[[ADHD]]** and impaired cognitive flexibility
- Overlap with networks targeted by **cognitive control therapies** and **neuromodulation**
